ACFEI Articles The American College of Forensic Examiners Continues Its Rich Tradition of Featuring the World’s Most Preeminent Forensic Experts Robert O’Block announces that Stanton Samenow, Ph.D., and Roy Hazelwood (FBI ret.) will be presenting featured workshops at the American College of Forensic Examiners’ 2005 National Conference, Sept. 30 – Oct. 1 in San Diego, CA. O’Block states, “We are very honored to have Stanton and Roy with us for this coming year’s conference. It is a testament of the constant advancement the organization is making to the field by featuring some of the most accomplished professionals in the field to provide training.” O’Block continues to say that “Stanton and Roy are true pioneers in the field of criminal behavior analysis and profiling.” Roy Hazelwood was one of the original profilers when the Behavioral Science Unit was first developed at Quantico. He was a Supervisory Special Agent with a focus on sexual crimes. Serving with the FBI for 22 years, he taught courses at the Academy, the University of Virginia, the University of Pennsylvania, the U. S. Military Police CID, and the Southern Police Institute. He is now Affiliate Professor of Administrative Justice at George Mason University and has appeared as an expert on criminal investigations on numerous radio and television shows. Hazelwood is a board certified forensic examiner and a commentator for The Forensic Echo. Before joining the FBI, he achieved the rank of Major in the Army Military Police Corp. Holding a Master of Science from NOVA University, he also studied forensic medicine at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington DC. He has received numerous awards and certificates from universities, criminal justice associations, and law enforcement agencies around the country. Hazelwood's early interest in autoerotic fatalities initiated a groundbreaking study that compiled the results of over 150 cases. He also conducted the largest known survey of police attitudes toward rape. With Drs. Park Dietz and Janet Warren, Hazelwood interviewed incarcerated men convicted of sexually sadistic crimes. They then did an involved study of the wives and girlfriends of sexual sadists. With Dr. John Hunter of the University of Virginia, Hazelwood is now researching juvenile sex offenders. Dr. Samenow received his B.A. (cum laude) from Yale University in 1963 and his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1968. After working as a clinical psychologist on adolescent inpatient psychiatric services in the Ann Arbor (Michigan) area, he joined the Program for the Investigation of Criminal Behavior at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C. From 1970 until June, 1978, he was clinical research psychologist for that program. With the late Dr. Samuel Yochelson, he participated in the longest in-depth clinical research-treatment study of offenders that has been conducted in North America. The findings of that study are contained in the three volume publication The Criminal Personality (Lanham, Md.: Roman and Littlefield) that he co-authored with Dr. Yochelson. In 1978, Dr. Samenow entered the private practice of clinical psychology in Alexandria, Virginia. His specialty has continued to be the evaluation and treatment of juvenile and adult offenders. Dr. Samenow has delivered lectures, training seminars, and workshops in 48 states, Canada, and England. These presentations have been to a variety of professional groups including mental health, law enforcement, corrections, education, social services, and the judiciary. He has served as a consultant and expert witness for a variety of courts and agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Dade County (Florida) Public Schools, Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the U.S. Office of Probation. In 1980, he was appointed by President Reagan to the Law Enforcement Task Force and in 1982 to the President's Task Force on Victims of Crime. In 1987, President Reagan appointed him as a Conferee to the White House Conference on a Drug-Free America. In 1994, a three-part videotape and workbook featuring Dr. Samenow's work was released (Commitment to Change:Overcoming Errors in Thinking distributed by FMS productions, Carpinteria, California). The materials provide an interactive program for use with inmates, students or staff in mental health, corrections, substance abuse programs, and educational settings. Early in 2000, a second series of videotapes and workbooks was released regarding identifying and addressing "tactics" which antisocial juveniles and adults deploy obstructing effective communication. The third series, The Powers of Consequences, was released during late July of 2002. O’Block mentions that “We continue this year with a very rich tradition within the organization. Past conferences have featured Dr. Henry Lee, world renowned criminalist, Dr. Cyril Wecht, internationally acclaimed forensic pathologist, and John Douglas, legendary expert on criminal profiling and former head of the F.B.I.’s Serial Crime Unit.” According to O’Block, the 2005 National Conference aims to present workshops that will represent each of the twelve specialty boards within the organization. Presentations will cover topics from forensic accounting, medicine, dentistry and the behavioral sciences all the way to forensic engineering and recorded evidence.
