About the Registered Investigator, RISM program

The Registered Investigator, RI program instructs, measures, and assesses knowledge and competency of investigators in both the public and private sectors. Providing a foundation of forensics basics, this course creates a measure of standardization in the field of investigation. As the National Academy of Sciences’ report on the Forensic Sciences reflects, certification for investigators is more crucial than ever before to fill the gaps in the field. The RI course will cover the following topics:

Learning Objectives

  1. Define and give examples of different types of investigations. 
  2. List the different types of sources used in an investigation. 
  3. Describe how to use physical evidence.  Identify how to process a crime scene. 
  4. Explain the differences between interrogations and interviews. 
  5. Explain how a polygraph test works. 
  6. Define how notes, photographs, and sketches are used during investigations. 
  7. Identify why people may become violent. 
  8. List the four forms of abuse. 
  9. Use proper investigation terminology and definitions relating to investigation.

How to maintain the RISM designation

Individuals are expected to complete 15 hours of forensic-related continuing education credits per year to maintain their RI status. The Phase I of the RI course provides 12–15 CE credits, depending on the amount of elective modules you take.

Future CEs may be earned through ACFEI’s National Conferences and journal learning articles from The Forensic Examiner® provided on our online course catalog.
