Requirements

All applicants must be U.S. citizens or resident aliens and at least 21 years of age.
By Examination
To become a RI® by examination, you must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Download the PDF application at this link.
- Provide documentation of at least two years of related working experience.
- Provide copies any degrees, licenses, certificates, and/or commissions.
- Provide a résumé/curriculum vitae.
- Provide a copy of your driver’s license.
- Pass the RI exam.
By Portfolio Review
To become a RI® by portfolio review, you must submit the following documentation:
- Download the PDF application at this link.
- Provide documentation of at least ten years of law enforcement or private sector (investigative) experience (complete; no gaps).
- Provide copies of any degrees, licenses, certificates, and/or commissions.
- Provide an updated résumé/curriculum vitae.
- Provide a copy of your driver’s license.
- Provide at least two letters of recommendation from an investigative/law enforcement professional.
