Job Responsibilities-Review, recommend and approve methods for laboratory analysis.
-Design and implement analytical laboratory procedures and sample chain-of-custody, quality control and assurance, laboratory safety or related programs and adapt new laboratory techniques.
-Monitor test results. Investigate and resolve inconsistencies in data. Evaluate technical problems and provide direction for resolution.
-Ensure compliance with regulatory rules and regulations pertaining to quality and laboratory methods.
-Provide sectional administrative support and direction including short-term and long-term planning.
-Prepare and maintain time and cost estimates for tests or experiments and calculating outside testing and sampling service costs. Prepare cost analysis projections to justify annual budget and capital improvement requests.
-Review new and proposed regulatory legislation to determine impact of operational procedures. Determine need for new instrumentation and/or new methods.
-Routinely audit, verify and document that laboratory is adhering to established (QC/QA) guidelines. Audit laboratory operations or individuals performance by examining paperwork. logbooks, observing methods, and the verbal questioning of personnel. Routinely review control charts, logs and laboratory and instrument maintenance records. Initiate correction action, if necessary, based upon audit findings.
As assigned act as the department's liaison with federal, state and local agencies and organizations. Involves: Perform highly specialized forensic science evaluations of controlled substances. Provide expert testimony in court. Provide technical advice and guidance to management. Represent the department at various meetings to provide assistance or gather information.
Supervise assigned personnel. Involves: Meet with supervisory and general staff on regularly scheduled basis. Oversee procedural activities.Prioritize and coordinate laboratory activities. Instruct, review, guide and check work. Appraise employee performance of senior staff and review evaluations by supervisors. Provide training and development. Ensure that applicable certifications are obtained and maintained for laboratory staff. Enforce personnel rules regulations, and work and safety standards. Counsel, motivate, and maintain harmony. Interview applicants. Recommend hires. transfers, disciplinary action, merit pay, or other employee status changes.
Job QualificationsA Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or related field, and five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in a laboratory performing chemical, bacteriological or physical analysis including two (2) years in supervisory capacity.
